ROADING ON WHARVES

Talks With Minister

The Minister of Works (Mr Allen), as chairman of the National Roads Boards has agreed to meet the Lyttelton Harbour Board when he is in Christchurch to discuss the board’s reading problems. The board recently applied for a Roads Board grant towards the cost of reading that has to be built from the wharves, but was told by the Roads Board that its act prevented it from making any contribution to private reading.. The works committee reported that there was a Roads Board grant of . £lO,OOO for use by the Lyttelton Borough Council for Gladstone quay and the grant had to be used by September. The board agreed to advise the council that as the first berth of the eastern extension would be opened in November, immediate plans should be made for the use of the money on Gladstone quay.
