JUNE ROAD TOLL
34 Killed; 10 Pedestrians
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, July 1. A total of 34 persons were killed in road accidents during June, compared with 30 for June last year. Deaths for the first six months of this year total 212, compared with 210 for the same period in 1963. “A feature of last month was the increase in pedestrian deaths,” said the Minister of Transport (Mr . McAlpine). “It is significant that six of the 10 pedestrians killed lost their lives in the dusk or darkness.” An early analysis of fatal road accidents for the first Six months of the year brought to- light three disturbing factors, he said. These were the high incidence of single-vehicle accidents, the consistently high week-end fatality rate, and the number of road deaths in what have come to be recognised as the danger hours.
