First Woman Lecturer For New University

Dr Evelyn Dinsdale, who was the first woman . for 10 years to receive a ■ master of arts degree ' with first-class honours in ’ geography from the Uni- • versity of Canterbury, is < the first woman lecturer appointed to the Univer- ' sity of Waikato. Dr. Dinsdale specialises in historical and cultural geography and will lecture to about 25 stage I geography students.

Educated at Tauranga Primary School and Tauranga College before coming to Christchurch, Dr. Dinsdale completed her M.A. in 1969. She won a Fulbright travel grant to attend Syracuse University. New York State, in

1960 and was awarded a Smith-Mundt grant She became a graduate assistant teaching part-time while doing research for her Ph.D.

After three years In the United States, Dr. Dinsdale travelled extensively in Britain, Europe and the Middle East She returned to New Zealand late last year.

Dr. Dinsdale has been teaching at Te Kuiti High School, where she met Mr B. Stokes, of London, to tfhom she is now engaged to be married. Mr Stokes is an English teacher brought to New Zealand to ease the staff shortage in New Zealand schools.
