NEW V.A.D. DIRECTOR SEES THE CITY

“I am amazed by the amount of work done by the Red Cross,” said the newly appointed director of the VAD. branch of the New Zealand Red Cross (Miss R. M. Simpson) in Christchurch yesterday.

Miss Simpson, who was formerly service matron of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, is visiting the Red Cross in Christchurch on an introductory tour. She took up her position as director three months ago. “I was just an average person who didn’t know anything about Red Cross," said Miss Simpson. “I am finding out a tremendous amount on this visit.

“We must educate people to know what Red Cross does, not only overseas but here in New Zealand. Few people know how much help they can get from Red Cross in New Zealand. It is amazing the number of needy families there are and the amount of help we give them in New Zealand.

“But to help these people we need so many helpers,” she said. “There would be so much more we could do if we had more helpers.” Last evening Miss Simpson inspected and addressed members of the North Canterbury Centre V.A.D. During the evening representatives . of several Red Cross groups gave a brief review bf their work for the society. Miss Simpson will be in

Christchurch until the end of the week, when she will go out with Meals on Wheels, the library service and field officers, and meet members of the Junior Red Cross.
