UNIVERSITY GYMNASIUM

16 Hours’ Use A Day The Canterbury University gymnasium is now in use seven days a week and five nights a week till midnight. It is used up to 16 hours a day. In this the gymnasium vied with the computer as the most-used facility in the whole university, the ViceChancellor (Dr. L. L. Pownall) reported to the University Council. Dr. Pownall distributed the gymnasium time-table to show it fully booked for a wide range of physical training, remedial exercises, sports coaching, and games by students, staff, and individuals.

The demand was so great that some students could not get in even to group work. More than 600 were enrolled for formal classes. Men outnumbered women by five to one in the students undertaking gymnasium work, but in staff, men outnumbered women by only three to one. Staff participation was a good feature, Dr. Pownall said, more than 70 were now spending at least an hour a week at badminton, squash, volley ball or straight exercises. The participants in all groups (staff and students) ranged from persons of poor physique to the athletically elite. Remedial work was an important service and this would be extended with the arrival of the full-time medical officer. Dr. Pownall said gymnasium time and space was overloaded but some relief might be obtained in 1966 by using a basement in the science building.

Henry Memorial. The Tokoroa Town Committee will set up a £20,000 trust fund as a memorial to Sir David Henry, chairman of New Zealand Forest Products, Ltd., who died earlier this year. The money will be used to pay a full-time youth director at the new £35,000 Tokoroa Y.M.C.A.—(P.A.)
