“CERTAIN TO BE GAOLED”
Stewards Who Stole Watches (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 1. Three stewards off the Southern Cross, who snatched watches worth £370 from the smashed display window of a Wellington jewellers’ shop last night were told today by Mr J. A. Wicks, S.M., that they would certainly be sent to gaol. They were Paul Camille Lauwers, aged .25, Josef Vermeers, aged 23, and Guido Remes, aged 21, all Belgians. Detective Senior Sergeant P. Gentry said Vermeers took off his shoe and broke the window and the three snatched up the watches on display. They admitted the smash-and-grab raid after the watches were found in their cabins.
The Southern Cross ' sailed today. Remanding the three for a week, the Magistrate said the only question in his mind was how long the period of imprisonment should be.
