LYTTELTON SEAMEN

Unemployment Relief Sought

The Lyttelton branch of the Seamen’s Union yesterday decided to ask the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) to give some measure of relief to unemployed seamen. The meeting was attended by 23 unemployed seamen, said the national president of the union (Mr T. Martin). The request to Mr Shand would be made through the union’s national office.

Mr Martin said that the 23 unemployed seamen at the Lyttelton meeting did not represent all the unemployed seamen at the port. In Auckland, he said, 80 seamen were out of work, and the situation Was also serious in Wellington. Mr Martin said the serious unemployment strengthened the union’s case for the manning of tankers by New Zealand seamen for deliveries around the New Zealand coast.
