N.Z. CHANCES IN CUP

“They’re Not Bad” (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, July 1. The Australian Davis Cup captain, Mr Harry Hopman, discussing the Davis Cup competition, said today: “You can’t leave the New Zealanders out of your calculations —they’re- not bad.” Mr Hopman said he thought New Zealand could beat Mexico in their first round match in Mexico City later this month. New Zealand meets Mexico on July 17, 18 and 19, the same days that Australia play Canada in Montreal in the other first round match in the American zone. The winners of these two matches will play each other. “Throughout all discussion on Australia’s chances, I’ve held the belief that we may not have to play Mexico,” Mr Hopman said. “The New Zealanders are playing well obviously when they can beat McKinley and Ralston.”
