ISSUES IN LONDON
Malaysia Aid, Sth. Rhodesia (Parltamentarv Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 1. Only if there were a change in circumstances between Malaysia and Indonesia would. New Zealand consider stepping up its aid to Malaysia, said the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) tonight Mr Holyoake was referring to suggestions by the British Prime Minister, Sir Alec Douglas-Home, that more aid from New Zealand might be required if Indonesia maintained its policy of confrontation.
Mr Holyoake said that in preliminary exchanges with other Commonwealth Premiers, be had already discussed “practical things which could give greater strength to the Commonwealth.” He declined to comment on the Southern Rhodesian issue. Asked whether New Zealand agreed with the reported attitude of older Commonwealth nations that Southern Rhodesia should not be given independence until it had a government more nearly representative of black as well as white citizens, he said: “This will doubtless be discussed.” “I am certain it would not be helpful for me to give expression to any opinions before the conference. This is not to suggest that New Zealand does not have a position, which has been, and will be, voiced in the proper quarters.” Accompanied by the Secretary of External Affairs (Mr A. D. Mclntosh), and a private secretary, Mr R. B. Taylor, Mr Holyoake will fly from Auckland tomorrow evening for London through the United States.
