Detergent Formula

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, July 1. A 30-year-old advertising executive stated by the prosecution to have offered detergent secrets for sale for £3OOO was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment at the Old Bailey yesterday. The man, John Louis Brand, a former prospective Labour parliamentary candidate, was found guilty of receiving confidential documents belonging to a firm of advertising agents, Young and Rubicam, Ltd., knowing them to have been stolen. He had pleaded not guilty. Both he and Paul Vincent Anthony McLoughlin, a 30-year-old medical student, were found not guilty of conspiring to injure Proctor and Gamble, the detergent firm, and Young and Rubicam, their advertising agents, by divulging confidential documents belonging to Young and Rubicam to Coalgate-Palmolive, Ltd., or to anyone who would buy the documents. McLoughlin was discharged. Mr Michael West, prosecuting, said the documents concerned the future marketing plans of Proctor and Gamble. If they were used wisely by a rival they could cause a loss of £750,000 in turnover.”
