Merivale Lane

Sir,—The estimates approved by the City Council for street improvements sound good for those lucky enough to get them, but makes me think Merivale lane is one of the most neglected parts of Christchurch. From No. 90 there is only one path to Papanui road—very rough in places—and outside the occupational school the fence is growing over a foot of the path so that two persons cannot pass at one point. The lighting Is bad. My 23-perch section was revalued and £lOOO added to the original purchase price. I was told it was the “most desirable part of the city to live”! Aikman’s road and Leinster road both have been widened to Papanui road. Why cannot they treat us the same? I understand some of the land has already been purchased for widening. —Yours, etc., RESIDENT NO. 1. June 22, 1964. [The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) said: “Further land has yet to be obtained before physical widening can be undertaken in the section of Merivale lane between Papanui road and Winchester street.”]

Oyster supplies show no sign of lessening and the oyster fleet remained on limits last month, although June is traditionally a month when bad weather causes oyster shortage. In Christchurch prices remain at 2s 3d dozen.
