Heating The Home
Sir, —Forget the modern experts, and think back a little, and it would mildly surprise some people to realise that the Maoris built a warmer house than all our modern builders. They had about six to eight inches of thatch on their roofs. We in all our wisdom sit in the best room in our houses, with less than an inch between us and the cold air that descends to make that record frost. Is it any wonder that we have to stoke the fire furiously in a vain attempt to keep warm? Science has proved beyond doubt that 60 per cent of all heat generated in the house is escaping through our flimsy ceilings, so why not wake up and “live” in our houses instead of “existing,” by finding a way of thickening up the ceilings and roofs?—Yours etc., P. L. BASHFORD. Kaiapoi, June 30, 1964.
