Role Of Prompt

(From Our Parliamentary Reporter)

WELLINGTON, June 30.

A MU to control overseas take-overs will be introduced this week by the Opposition. The move is part of a Labour campaign this session to air its own policies by introducing private members’ bills.

The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nordmeyer) said in the House of Representatives tonight that it was apparent from the Budget, as from the Speech from the Throne, that the Government could not make up its mind just what to do about take-overs from abroad judged to be

against the national interest.

“If the Government cannot make up its mind, the Opposition will help. In the next few days the Opposition will, introduce a bill on overseas takeovers.

“It could be that the Government’s tax proposals on payments leaving New Zealand will discourage overseas investment and take-overs.” The bill will be the second private member’s bill from the Opposition this year. Others are in preparation but few, if any, are likely to pass.
