Patterson Aims At Title For Prestige

RONNEBY (Sweden). Floyd Patterson, former world heavy-weight boxing champion, admitted at his training camp today that he is aiming for another shot at the world title next Sunday for prestige rather than for money “because I’m a fairly wealthy man.” United Press International reported. Patterson, aged 29, fights the second-ranking contender, Eddie Machen of Portland. Oregon, in a 12-round bout at Stockholm’s 55,000-seat Raasunda soccer stadium.
The promoters call the fight “an eliminator” because the winner would be in a position to challenge the champion, Cassius Clay, in case the former champion, Sonny Liston, is permanently refused reinstatement as challenger by the World Boxing Association. Patterson is rated sixth by the association. “I consider Machen the chief obstacle in my drive for the titld,” said Patterson. “If I can whip Eddie, I'm pretty confident I can take the title
from Cassius Clay because of my speed and style.”
Patterson has had less than 10 rounds of actual competition during the last two and a half years, but both he and his manager-trainer, Dan Florio, insist he is in excellent condition.
