TIME OFF SCHOOL
Two Girls Suspended (N Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, June 29. The New Plymouth High School board tonight confirmed the action of the headmaster of Spotswood College (Mr A. L. McPhail), who suspended two girls from school for three days.
The girls, Mary Prout and Robin McKenzie, both aged 15, took time off from school to see a concert by the Beatles.
The principal suspended the girls “for being away without authority.” The suspension will end tomorrow.
After his action was confirmed tonight, Mr McPhail said he would like to explain that he was not against the Beatles but that his action would have been the same if pupils took time off to see a Ranfurly Shield Rugby match. Mary’s elder brother in Auckland sent her two tickets to the concert in the Auckland Town Hall. Mr McPhail said he was always reasonable about time off for special occasions. “But it had to be something special.”
