Personalities
Nine New Zealanders. By Barry Mitcalfe. Illustra- • tions by A. G. Manson. Whitcombe and Tombs. 72 pp.
The author of these character sketches has selected some notable New Zealanders —four of them Maoris, and five Europeans, to present to young readers. The booklet would make a splendid text for pupils of Forms 1 and 11. The Maoris it deals with are Potatau te Wherowhero (the first Maori King), Te Kooti, Te Whiti and Sir Maui Pomare, Who receives a more rounded portrayal than the rest. In the study of Te Whiti his disciple Tohu needs some introduction. The Europeans featured are John Rutherford, F. E. Maning, the missionary Henry Williams, Sir George Grey and Elsdon Best. Little has been written about the lastnamed scholar who, as the author relates, spent 15 years in the forests of the Uruwera as a foreman of Public works, and filled many notebooks with a vast store of material relating to Maori lore. A list of sources of suggested further reading material would have enhanced the value of this very readable series of miniature biographies.
