READING ABILITY

“Remedial Work” At Papanui H.S. Because of recent publicity for reading ability, the headmaster of Papanui High School (Mr E. Fancy) outlined to a meeting of the board of governors the remedial work which has been done by English teachers in the school in the last few years. ,

After testing, “lower ability” third forms and pupils in higher forms, who show individual reading weaknesses, are given remedial work, which includes study of vocabulary, a reading laboratory, graded readers, and the provision of suitable books in the library.

It was difficult to state, Mr Fancy said, what percentage of pupils was retarded or advanced because not all pupils had been tested.

It was noticeable, however that the degree of backwardness was directly proportional *0 the ability of the class. Where pupils were badly retarded, much individual teaching was necessary, or specialist treatment was required. In many cases the reading age was on a par with a mental age, indicating that such pupils were not really retarded, Mr Fancy said.
