EXTENDING HOLIDAYS

Policy Change In N.Z. Seen The Government might seriously consider the extension of annual holidays from two weeks to three weeks, said the national president: of the New Zealand Engineering and Related Industries’ Association (Mr A. S. Farrar) at the association's annual meeting in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Farrar said that holiday entitlements had been increased during the last year in several countries, notably Australia, where three weeks was now almost universally minimum.

Annual leave, he said, had also been liberalised for State employees. They now re-; ceived three weeks’ holiday after five years’ service or on reaching class four. Mr Farrar said the former reluctance of the Arbitration Court to grant three weeks’ annual leave to employees after 10 years’ continuous service with the same employer appeared to be undergoing some change. The Court had now granted this provision in a few cases. This led to the presumption that it was changing its policy.
