NZ ANTARCTIC SOCIETY
Canterbury Branch Meeting
An increase in membership from 112 to 151 during the year was reported by Mr R J. Stanley, president of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Antarctic Society, at the annual meeting. He said tins figure was very encouraging. During the year two applications for membership had been received from members of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition at the Mawson and Davis stations.
Mr Stanley said an outstanding event in the history of the branch had been the selection of two members, Messrs G. Hurrell and B. Norris, to take part in the clearing of Captain Scott’s hut at Hut Point in McMurdo Sound. It was most satisfactory that some members had been able to work in Antarctica, and he hoped that if another team was sent next season members of the branch would be included.
Mr Stanley also referred to the Antarctic bursary scheme launched by the branch, and reported that members had already given £lOO, including profits from the sale of Christmas cards. He was confident the full amount required would be raised.
Officers elected were: president, Mr R. J. Stanley; vicepresidents, Dr. B. Stonehouse and Mr J. H. M. Williams; honorary secretary, Miss H. S Hill; honorary treasurer, Mr E. P. Clacey; honorary auditor. Miss L O. Orchard; committee, Mrs E. Cross, Miss Rata McLean, Messrs A. C. Brustad, J. M. Caffin, H. F. Griffiths, L Harkess, G. Hurrell, A. J. Roberts, J. Mather, and D. Wood.
