Visit To N.Z. Museums
The world’s foremost authority on Greek pottery. Sir John Beazley, professor of classical archaeology at Oxford from 1925 to 1956, is visiting New Zealand to see Greek pottery in museums. He has begun his visit in Christchurch and will go to Dunedin, Wellington, and Auckland before visiting Australia.
In Christchurch, Sir John Beazley will see the James Logie collection at the University of Canterbury and also the pottery in the Canterbury Museum.
He will also see the fine collection in the Otago Museum.
Sir John Beazley is regarded as the foremost classical scholar on Greek pottery and has written the standard reference books on the subject.
His work has been recognised by the award of nine honorary degrees from universities in Britain, France, Greece, and Australia. He was knighted in 1949 and in 1959 was made a Companion of Honour.
Sir John Beazley is accompanied by his wife, who has assisted him in his work for many years. She has photographed many of the pots he has studied.
