“It’s a man’s world,” said Mrs T. C. J. Sutherland- Her words, as she waved farewell to her constable husband, a member of the 20-strong New ! Zealand police unit for ser- ' vice in Cyprus, summed up ' the feelings of other wives, ‘ mothers and sweethearts at Wellington airport this morn- ' ing.
I The unit left by R.N.Z.A.F. ■ Hastings aircraft at 9.30, after I a short formal farewell by i police and Government offi- ' cials. There was a gathering ' ■ of about 150. 1 i The Prime Minister (Mr i , Holyoake) inspected a guard j : of honour of police cadets • outside the terminal building ' after the departure. ' He was greeted by Assist- 1 ant - Commissioner G. A. < Howes, and was introduced to the leader of the force, , Inspector G. Wells, of Wei- J lington, who paraded with his ( men. “Vital Task” ) Mr Howes said the New ( , Zealand police had a record ' for meeting unexpected and ( 1 difficult situations, and he ' I had little doubt the unit 5 t would enhance that record. ] , Theirs was a task of vital j ] importance—the restoration f in Cyprus of peace and order. ] Mr Holyoake said the unit j i represented the spirit of the ] > New Zealand police and the , t people of the Dominion- The • task could be dangerous in ( ; view of the situation in ] t Cyprus. ; Other speakers were the i t Leader of the Opposition (Mr , Nordmeyer), the High Com- 1 > missioner for Australia (Dr. 1 , D.
