MAGISTRATE’S COURT Imprisonment For False Pretences

“It is unfortunate that you have a persistency for offending, and you are getting to the stage when the Court will consider sending you to the Supreme Court for a sentence of preventive detention,” said Mr K. H. J. Headifen, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday when he sentenced Norman William Cole, aged 42, a labourer, to 18 months’ imprisonment on six charges of false pretences and one of theft. He was convicted and discharged on a charge of breach of probation. Cole was appearing for sentence. He was not represented by counsel. TWO MONTHS’ GAOL "The probation officer described you as an habitual loafer and sponger—l agree,” said the Magistrate when imposing two months’ imprisonment on Neil Ernest Dempsey, a labourer, when he appeared for sentence on a charge of being idle and disorderly in that he consorted with habitual thieves. Mr S. G. Erber said Dempsey’s parents had separated when he was a youth, and he had lost the benefit of parental guidance. PROBATION The accused had consumed the best part of a bottle of whisky with a companion before committing the offence, said Mr M. J. Glue, who appeared for Johnny Rewai Hoani Aparere Henare, aged 20, a painter. Henare was admitted to probation for 18 months and was ordered to pay £lO towards the cost of the prosecution and to make restitution of £37 on a charge of burglary on March 7. He was appearing for sentence. Keith Alistair Miller, aged 17, a workman (Mr S. G. Erber), was placed on probation for 12 months when he appeared for sentence on a charge of unlawful sexual intercourse on January 13. OFFENCE ADMITTED Gloria Joyce Wilcox, aged 26, unemployed, pleaded guilty to secreting herself in the vessel Kirribilll and was remanded on bail to April 9 for sentence. Detective-Sergeant D. C. Lee said Wilcox was found on board the ship, which sailed from Lyttelton to Timaru on March 26. She said that when she went on board she was told the ship would sail at noon but it left at 11.30 a.m. The ship was searched before it left Lyttelton. FAILED TO REPORT Appearing on warrant for his arrest for failing to comply with terms of his bail, Maurice Winstone Clarke, was remanded on bail to April 6 for sentence. Detective-Sergeant Lee said Clark failed to report to the police daily as ordered. REMANDED Valerie Joan Wren, aged 40, was remanded on bail to April 9 on a charge of stowing away on the Kirribilli on March 26. Anthony Preston Blewitt, aged 32, a clerk, was remanded on bail to April 9 on a charge of driving under the influence of drink or drugs on Riccarton road on March 29. lan Murray Clegg, aged 31, an engine driver, was remanded on bail to April 9 on a charge of stealing nails, valued at £6 2s, on March 29. Owen Leslie Pugh, aged 41, a storeman, was remanded to April 9 on a charge of being a rogue and a vagabond in that he was found by night in a house. Mellanie Miriama Patterson, aged 19, was remanded on bail to April 9 on three charges of

obtaining credit by fraud between March 22 and 27.

Raymond Harry Hills, aged 34, a workman, was remanded in custody to April 9 on a charge of failing to report while on bail. Detective-Sergeant D. Lee said the defendant had been on bail to appear in the Supreme Court on a charge of robbery. He had attempted to leave the country and had been prevented from doing so only by the Easter holidays. On charges of obtaining goods to the value of £lO by a false pretence at Christchurch on March 5, and breach of probation at Dunedin on February 26, William Robert McLennan, aged 31, was remanded on bail to April 9. REMANDED Edwin Ernest Balloch, aged 43. was remanded on bail to April 9 on charges of assaulting the police on April 1, resisting the police, and disorderly behaviour. James Dyer Balloch. aged 47, was remanded on bail to April 9 on a charge of driving on Fendalton road while under the influence of drink or drugs on April 1. On a charge of obtaining £3O by a false pretence at Christchurch on January 17, Richard Clyde Harvey, aged 35, was remanded on bail to April 9. Brian Pringle, aged 23, was remanded in custody to April 9 on a charge of unlawfully taking a motor-car valued at £350 at Christchurch on April 1. On a charge of breaking and entering with Intent to commit a crime at Petone on December 29, Thomas Docherty Gill, aged 18, was remanded on bail to April 9.
