Rio Impressive In Gallop

"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. April 2. Rio showed himself to be a colt of exceptional speed when he galloped brilliantly over half a mile with Surf Boy at Ellers lie this morning. Both horses were preparing for the £4lOO Wills Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday. Baraboo, another visiting voungester getting ready for the big race, was just as impressive over five furlongs. Of the older horses none went better than Nestle Brae, Awaroa and Arakhan. Nestle Brae galloped half a mile. Awaroa three furlongs and Arakhan a mile. Fast work was done on the No, 1 grass and the plough. Both tracks were lightning fast. On the No. 1 grass, Rio iHughes) was better than Surf Boy (Tinsley) at the end of half a mile in 47 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 36sec. Rio ran wide in the straight and that made his work all the more impressive. After a slow beginning Baraboo (Tinsley) finished strongly over five furlongs in Imin Isec. the last half-mile in 48 2-ssec and three fuylongs in 37sec. He has done really well since coming north. Last Monday, Baraboo was an easy winner in the Victoria Handi cap.
