BLED AT NOSE

Ilumquh May Be Out (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, April 2. Because Ilumquh bled after his final gallop for the Maurice Millar Memorial Handicap, his trainer, E. Ropiha, has scratched him from the first leg of the double on the opening day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting. Ropiha, speaking from Woodville this afternoon, said: “I discussed Ilumquh’s future today with his owner (Mr Williams), and we decided to wait until next week before making permanent plans for the gelding.” Ilumquh, which has bled lightly at the nose several times during the last month, galloped this morning before his trainer, owner, a veterinary surgeon, and a iary steward (Mr W. Freeman). He pulled up well after a brisk six furlongs with his stablemate Baloo, but a trickle of blood appeared at a nostril 30 minutes afterwards.

Ropiha said his present intention was to start Ilumquh in the Awapuni Gold Cup on Saturday week, if all went well in the meantime. “A recurrence of the complaint could mean the end to the horse’s career,” he said.
