UK. BUTTER SUPPLY
Blending Types May Be Short Unless Government action was taken to improve the supply position, there could be a shortage of blending types of butter in Britain in the next two months, says a report from the London office of the Bank of New Zealand. The weekly release of 4500 tons of New Zealand and Australian butter was quickly taken up. Because of a spot shortage of blending butter, the market at the moment is firmer. The demand for New Zealand butter continued to be steady at unchanged prices of 334 s to 335 s a cwt. Danish butter was unchanged in price at 397 s to 399 s (ex quay) and weekly arrivals totalled 1500 tons. The basic United Kingdom import quotas to March next year have been announced at 420,000 tons with provision for additional imports if necessary. Of this total, New Zealand has a quota of 168,000 tons, Denmark 98,000, Australia 66,700, Poland 17,210, Netherlands 15,000, Eire 12,900, Finland 12,370, and other countries from 215 to 5000 tons. The price of New Zealand crated cheese has been increased by 10s a cwt and rindless by 15s. This is the first change in price for New Zealand crated white in more than four years. It is now quoted at 241 s with rindless white at 2515.
