N.Z. Will Hold World Place
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, April 2. Such was the standard reached by younger players on the All Blacks tour of Britain that New Zealand should remain at the top of world Rugby, the team’s assistant manager (Mr N. J. McPhail) told delegates at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union today.
Mr McPhail said that the team was tremendously strong in the forwards but by the end of the tour the backs also were a force. “To combat the negative tactics of opposing teams we had to make use of our forward strength and neglect the backs, particularly early in the tour.” He said that the backs were regarded highly by British
critics and M. J. Dick was regarded by some as the best wing three-quarters in the world. “Surprisingly our backs collectively were much faster than their opponents and also were just as skilful.” Mr McPhail said he was not prepared to say that the team was a great one, but it was a very good side. The team’s record of only one loss proved that.
