Barred Rock, Australorp, Top Egg-Laying Trial
Two pullets each laid 333 eggs in a 336-day trial held by the New Zealand Utility Poultry Club. The champion layers were Barred Rock belonging to A. W. Easton (Hastings) and an Australorp from E. G. Wood (Leeston). The top White Leghorn from A. S. McClintock and Son (Riversdale) laid 328 eggs. Four hundred and seventyfive birds competed, including 43 six-bird teams and ten 20-bird teams. Fifty-four birds, or 11.4 per cent, died during the period. Once during the trial the birds were judged for type; and each bird’s eggs were judged twice for size, shape, colour and texture.. Teams with the highest egg scores in each breed were:— Six-bird teams.—-Austra-lorpis: • F. Sonne. (Amberley) 1748. White Leghorns: R. J. Thom (Christchurch) 1782. Any other variety: D. J. Bullock (Oamaru) with Rhode island Reds 1677. Twenty-bird teams.—Australorps; W. A. - McClatchy (Kaiapoi) 5068. White Leghorns: H. G. Sugden (Christchurch) 4747. This year’s competitors included three young men— R. J. Thom (Christchurch), D. J. Bullock (Oamaru), and
