RITES IN RUSSIA

Drive By Atheists (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MOSCOW, April 2. Russian authorities today stepped up a drive to get rid of christening, confirmation and other religious rites and replace them with Communist coremonies. The official atheistic journal “Science and Religion,” admitted that such religious practices continued in spite of the Russian propaganda campaign to turn its 226,000,000 citizens into atheists.

The magazine said many christenings, confirmations and circumsions were taking place—not with consent of parents but through clandestine efforts of older relatives —grandparents, aunts and uncles in whom the religious impulse died hard. Priests, ministers and rabbis who performed religious rites on children without their parents’ consent should be held criminally responsible, the magazine said. For people who feel a sense of deprivation without religious rites, Russian authorities are trying to encourage turning ordinary civil registration of births into Communiststyle ceremonies. In addition, Russia is trying to replace religious holidays, including Easter and Christmas, with secular holidays.
