DEVASTATION IN KODIAK

(N.Z.P. A. -Reuter —Copyright) ANCHORAGE (Alaska), April 2. Abnormal tides throughout Alaska have been reported since the devastating earthquake on Good Friday which has so far claimed a reported total of 178 lives. Fisherman at Kodiak Island (above) report that tides are regularly eight feet higher, giving rise to the belief that the island has sunk that much. Extra high tides continue to flood the dock areas.

From Valdez, however, there are reports that tides are 14 feet lower, indicating the earth there has heaved upward. In Washington, President Johnson today decided to ask Congress for an immediate appropriation of 50 million dollars for disaster relief in Alaska. The White House said he was also setting up a federal commission under the chairmanship of Senator C. P. Anderson, to work on a long-range relief and rehabilitation programme for the state.
