AUDIENCE UNAWARE FILM WAS LAST
(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, April 2. The Meteor Theatre in Palmerston North closed last night after 28 years. The theatre was sold last year, but the closure was not expected to be so sudden. The 160 theatre-goers at the screening of “It’s All Happening” last night were all unaware they were seeing the last film to be shown at the theatre. Palmerston North, with 44,000 people, is left with three picture theatres. Of these the State has no upstairs accommodation, and it is believed the Mayfair may be closing soon for extensive alterations.
The Lamphouse Companies Group bought the cinema last year for £27,500 to convert it
into a block of shops and offices. The Government valuation was £30,000. The managing director of the Lamphouse Group, Mr A. S. Cornish, said renovations to the Meteor would cost about £20,000. An arcade would be built on the ground floor, with shops on either side. A new floor built over the seating area from the lounge floor to the screen would provide warehouse and further office space.
