RUSSIAN GOLD
Huge Sales Reported (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, April 1. The Soviet Government is again selling gold—in a big way, according to a special financial correspondent writing in the “Daily Mail.” The first sales of 1964, in the early days of March, he adds, were much larger than the figure of 45m dollars widely reported in the market. The total was nearer 150 m. Most of the gold, however, was sold through official channels and may thus have escaped notice. “The Soviet authorities are still spurning the short-term credit facilities that were offered to them from Ottawa and London to finance their cereal purchases,” the correspondent goes on. “The flow of these imports is now being resumed with the unfreezing of the Canadian ports, and cash is being paid for them.”
