Lyttelton Boat Harbour
Sir,—While fully appreciating what a problem the Lyttelton Harbour Board has on its hands in finding room for small boats, I am curious as to what the final solution will be. Does the board intend to finally shift all the boats over to Purau, leaving the present mooring space to the fishing fleet; or is the proposed boat harbour going to be built? Talk of the tunnel saving seven miles is nonsense, as anyone going to Purau goes over Dyers Pass and, as for the causeway, well, my grandchildren will be tripping over their beards before that is built. The return journey to Purau is about 44 miles, too far for a day’s sailing. Why not dredge Governors Bay? Nelson Harbour Board has just done something similar for the small craft.—Yours, etc., WAITING. March 16, 1964. [This letter was referred to the chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, Mr A. A. Macfarlane, who stated that as previously reported in the newspapers, the board has approved a scheme for the development of Purau Bay for moorings for small craft.
The board’s modernisation programme for the inner harbour includes the construction of a new harbour for small craft and the widening of No. 7 wharf to the west, which will eventually require the removal of all small craft from the inner harbour. Legislative authority to carry out this work is contained in the Lyttelton Harbour Board Loan and Empowering Act, 1962.]
