Inquiries At Trentham

WELLINGTON, March 15. Shortly after passing the five furlongs in the Wakefield Challenge Stakes at Trentham on Saturday, Shipmate (A. J. Stokes) shifted ground slightly. As a result Surf Boy had to be eased and Honey Blonde, which was following, was sharply checked. After questioning the assistant stipendiary steward on duty at this point the judicial committee decided to take no action. Inside the last furlong Shipmate ran away from the whip and became unbalanced. In the first furlong of the Rimu High-weight Full Course (B. T. Jones) was checked and lost his position. The judicial committee viewed a film of the incident and later showed it to G. Jenkins, the rider of Garwan which had crossed over quickly in the early stages of the race. The committee did not charge Jenkins, but warned him of the consequences of similar riding in future. Count Pedro, the winner, attempted to hang in on several occasions in the run down the straight in the Champion Hack Handicap. Because of he could not be properly ridden out. Count Pedro won the race by half a neck from Nampa. Gold Ruth, which tailed the field in the Hutt Handicap, was examined by a veterinary surgeon after the race, but he could find nothing amiss with her.
