OVERDUE WIN

Wildwood Chief Regains Form Wildwood Chief gained an overdue win when he led for all but the first furlong and a half in the President’s Handicap at Addington Raceway on Saturday. Wildwood Chief was a winner in the Riccarton Stakes at his first appearance for the season, but he had raced most unluckily in most of his subsequent appearances. Wildwood Chief made a fast beginning from 24 yards and W. R. Butt sent him through on the inner to join Happy Ending and Black Ancestor in the lead at the end of a little more than a furlong. Wildwood Chief was a clear leader at the end of a furlong and a half. He set a strong pace and opened up a lead of three lengths over Admire racing to the straight Peerswick had improved to be third ahead of Meadowmac, Happy Ending, Bellajily and Cloudy Bay. Wildwood Chief was kept up to his work, but he was not tested and won handily by a length. Meadowmac paced a splendid race for second, a head in front of Admire, which was handy throughout. Cloudy Bay, but for racing greenly in the straight would have returned a dividend. He was a length back fourth, just ahead of Happy Ending and Bellajily, with a gap to Balcairn, and another to Peerswick. Highland Globe, Local John, which was checked, Ulove and Bossa Nova gave ground at the start.
