RECORD ENTRIES AT 50TH CHEVIOT SHOW

Gate Takings Nearly Double Last Year

One of Canterbury’s infamous north-westerly winds descended in full cry o nthe Cheviot Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s fiftieth jubilee show on Saturday and attempted throughout the day to sweep the show grounds clean of competitors, exhibits and tent's. It toppled horse jumps, tore at canvas, shook loud-speakers, bounced tent poles, played ball with hats and teased skirts, but failed to drive off a large number of spectators. Nor did it detract from the high standard of competition and the good quality of the entries.

In spite of the strong blustery wind, the weather cleared as the day progressed, with only the odd spatter of rain drops to remind one of the presence of the threatening rain clouds built up over the Lowry Peaks range, behind the show grounds. However, the wind did succeed in making a nuisance of itself and caused several interruptions when the power was cut off on occasions. This year’s total entries, at 3291, were a record for the association and the gate takings at £B3 14s 3d were much better than the £43 18s 6d taken at the very wet show last year. Stalwart Riders Horse and pony competitions were again one of the major highlights of the day, several of the stalwart competitors, who are among the little circus following round the majority of the shows, adding more ribbons and championships to their tallies. Judges in these sections commented favourably on the standard and numbers of entries. Competition in the sheep section also drew praise from the judges who said that with the exception of a few faults in some classes, the quality was very high. In some instances judging was difficult and the championships were separated by only a fine margin of points. Other features of the show were old machinery and an ancient wool waggon drawn by three draught horses, which carried the local dignitaries at the vanguard of the grand parade, as well as a wood chopping event. A magnificent bowl of golden flowers was the outstanding feature of the flower exhibit depicting art through the years. The golden flowers marked the jubilee ear. The jubilee show also marked the retirement of the association’s secretary of long standing, Mr F. D. Childs, who has been secretary for 25 years. The president, Mr P. Le Cren made a presentation to Mr and Mrs Childs. CHAMPIONSHIPS Championships were awarded as follows: Sheep.—Corriedale, ram: D. S. Johns Trust, and reserve. Ewe: J. F. G. Blakely and reserve.
