Cricketers For Fiji

(N.Z. Press Association) ' NELSON, March 15. Two years’ hard toil to raise funds—including harvesting 20001 b of tobacco leaf and cutting 44,000 tomato and tobacco stakes—lies behind members of the 1961-62 Nelson Hawke Cup cricket squad, who will leave next Friday for an 18-day tour of Fiji. The 12 cricketers, in a party of 31, which includes wives and supporters, will begin a tour of nine one-day matches. The players are determined to play bright and entertaining cricket The team, led by the captain, D. V. Spence, is a strong one. It includes I. B. Leggat, a former New Zealand representative, and B. L. Hampton, twelfth man in the New Zealand team now playing South Africa at Auckland. The other players are: K. A. Baker, J. E. Black, L R. Hampton, B. E. Jewell, P. A. Newman, T. G. Newman, E. A. Potts, L. B. Reade, R. D. Wilson. The team will be managed by Mr C. J. Martin, chairman

of the Nelson Cricket Association’s executive. In addition to five matches against district associations, the team will compete in the Crompton Cup competition. This annual tournament, played over four days at Easter, draws the leading teams in the Fiji group. No match has been arranged against a representative Fijian side. Boys’ Results Boys’ Association cricket matches played on Saturday resulted as follows: Senior I Xavier 129 (Cox 32: Dawson three for 9, Hamilton three for 15) and 95 (Lake six for 28, Dawson three for 18) beat Christ's College 93 (Hunt 61: Madrussan aeven for 29. Forde three for 43) and 68 (Madrussan seven for 19) outright. Linwood High School 134 and 69 for two (Patcbett 41 not out) beat Cashmere High School 56 and 145 (Palmer 37, Ryde 31: Cooper four for 34. Quested six for 54) by eight wickets. Senior II Linwood High School 129 (Fine five for 47) and 114 for four (Marriott 50) beat Boys' Higb School 120 and 120 (Row lands seven for 26) by six wickets.
