TARANAKI BEATEN
Rugby Under New Rules
(N.Z. Frets Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH, March 15. An almost full strength Taranaki Rugby team was well beaten by an invitation Trojans team by 25 points to 16 at Rugby Park, New Plymouth, on Saturday. The match, the first major one of the season, was played under the amended rules.
With the Trojans’ forwards obtaining a feast of the ball for their backs, the Ranfurly Shield holders were hard-put to contain their hard-running opposites. The amended rules allowed the back-lines more freedom to run without hindrance from marauding forwards, and the game generally was fast-moving. Each team scored four tries, but the Wellington fullback, M. Williment, was in deadly form with his kicking. He kicked 13 points. The Auckland inside-back combination of D. M. Connor and A. H. Clarke was also at its sparkling best, and, aided by plenty of ball from the forwards, had the edge on R. H. Brown and the All Black vice-captain, K. C. Briscoe, opposite.
