DAMAGE ON PLAINS

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 15 Damage of at least £68,000 was caused in the Rangitaiki plains—Waimana—Taneatua areas by floods last week.

Floods over the plains were receding rapidly tonight, but 8000 acres were still under water up to four feet.

Stock losses in the Whakatane area have been light compared with those in Opotiki. More than 50 people, mainly volunteers, worked until 10 p.m. on Saturday and most of today to build a stopbank on the western end of the Kopeopeo canal.

Floods from the canal threatened to inundate a further 400 acres. The breach was closed this afternoon.
