Gain For Squash

Squash rackets in Christchurch this season should benefit greatly by the return of D. R. Preston, a Canterbury representative against the Australian visitors of 1961, and runner-up to R. G. Pattinson for the Christchurch title of that year. Preston, who has spent the last two seasons in Dunedin, has accepted a position with a Christchurch firm.

Preston’s matches with Pattinson were a feature of the 1961 season in which he played in top position for University, the winner that year of the A grade interclub title. Following his defeat in four games in the title event, Preston took Pattinson to 7-9 in the fifth game in inter-club, and this was his only loss during the inter-club season. At that time his main asset was his splendid court coverage, but during the 1963 tournament season he consistently showed that his shot-making ana technique has improved considerably. Preston's return will compensate to a considerable extent for the loss to Australia of the present Christchurch champion, M J, Simons, and he is expected to rapidly regain his former high ranking in local squash.
