PANAMA DISPUTE

Agreement Near

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, March 11. A Latin American diplomat said last night that Panama had agreed to restore diplomatic relations with the United States and confer on differences over the Panama Canal. United States sources said a compromise agreement between the two countries was near but had not been reached-

The diplomat, who would not be identified, said a United States request for rewording of the proposed agreement, set forth by an Organisation of American States committee, had delayed its announcement. In Panama, the Foreign Minister (Mr Galileo Solis) described any reports Panama had agreed to reestablish diplomatic relations with the United States as premature, but he admitted the two countries were near agreement on a formula to end the deadlock.

Drought Breaks.—Torrential rain has fallen in parts of the drought-stricken Victoria river district in the north western area of the Northern Territory. Rivers are rising and roads have been cut by flood waters. — Darwin March 12.
