Yen Convertible On April 1

Japan today notified the International Monetary Fund that the Japanese yen will become a freely convertible currency on April 1, the I.M.F. announced. At the same time the fund announced that a standby arrangement has been concluded under which Japan can draw from the fund the equivalent of £l36m over the next year Business Personal Sir Bernard .Ashwin has been elected chairman of BP (New Zealand), Ltd., from April 1. He succeeds Mr G. G. Gibbes Watson, chairman since the formation of the company. Sir Bernard Ashwin was deputy-chairman. Mr B. D. Garden has been appointed commercial manager of Philips Electrical Industries of N.Z., Ltd. Mr G rden joined Philips in 1952 as manager of the measuring and control equipment division and was appointed tech-nical-commercial manager in 1956.
