Hit Reef, Not Rock
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 28. The Japanese fishing mother ship, Kaiko Maru No. 15, which grounded off the Tauranga coast on February 13, struck Astrolabe reef; not an uncharted rock as thought by her skipper, the Navy Office said today. Astrolabe reef is four miles from the spot where the craft was originally stated to have grounded. The reef is six' feet above water at low tide and is awash at full water. According to the time of grounding the reef must have been hit just before high water. This week Navy divers recovered a piece of metal which has since been identified as part of the ship’s hull.
