ST. GEORGE’S HOSPITAL

£3600 Raised In Market Tlie sum of £36oo—a record—was raised by the twoday market in aid of the St. George's Hospital building fund, which concluded last night at the Durham Street Art Gallery. "We are happy and thankful,” said Mr R. J. Collins (deputy-chairman of the St. George’s Hospital Board executive) when counting of the proceeds concluded. He said that with donations still to come it was hoped that the total will approach £4OOO. The iharket, which was opened by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr H. P. Smith) on Thursday afternoon, was the first effort of the appeal to raise funds for the new operating block of the hospital. About £40.000 will be required. A wide variety of stalls, offering all manner of goods, had been eagerly patronised by Christmas shoppers, and the two days of brisk buying concluded with an auction last night. Goods for sale were provided by people in Christchurch and from farming districts. Included in the sale were paintings given by the New Zealand artist, Austin Deans, winner of the 1963 Kelliher Art Prize, and antiques, which proved particularly popular. Come of the women who had worked hard with the sale this year had helped with the first St. George's Hospital sale, held 40 years ago. said Mr Collins. The women had worked unstintingly for many months and had shown tremendous loyalty. he said.
