Rhodes Scholars Chosen
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 29. Mr W. S. Wakelin, a University of Canterbury engineering graduate, and Mr \V. Baragwanath, a University of Auckland law student, have been selected as this year’s Rhodes Scholars. The announcement was made this evening by the New Zealand Rhodes Scholar selection committee, which met at Government House. The two scholars will start at Oxford in September or October next year. Mr Wakelin, aged 22, who comes from Tokoroa, attended the New Plymouth Boys' High School and passed his engineering intermediate examination at Auckland. He came to Canterbury in 1960 and completed his BE in chemical engineering with first-class honours last y’ear This year he began reading for a doctorate of philosophy He will continue this course at Oxford. He has wide sporting interests and has been a member of the university senior
Rugby team for two years. In 1962 he played for a Canterbury colts’ team. He is also a keen tramper and athlete In August he was elected president of the University of Canterbury Students’ Association for 1964-65. Mr Baragwanath. aged 23. attended the Auckland Grammar School. He is a keen athlete and a Rugby referee.
His other sporting interests are yachting, swimming and tennis. Mr Baragwanath proposed to study for a bachelor of common law degree.
A porpoises’ pool in which porpoises will be trained after capture, is to be built at Durban aquarium. Reuter.
