AIR HOSTESS FROM JAPAN
Week’s Holiday In NX A holiday in Japan for passengers travelling by Qantas starts on board the aircraft, when kimono-clad . hostesses are on hand to explain the currency, give information on tourist attractions, and answer questions. Miss Hatsuyo (Mimi) Kubo, one of the 10 hostesses employed by the airline, said in Christchurch last night that their job was to smooth the way of incoming tourists, and to help Japanese passengers with language problems. A career as an air hostess seems to be as popular in Japan as anywhere. Applicants for Qantas had to speak English, and have a good family background, education and appearance. Once accepted they took a two-month training course in Sydney, and had to acquire a certificate in first-aid as well. Miss Kubo is in New Zealand on a week's holiday, which will be spent mostly in the North Island. She became an air hostess to “see the world, and meet the people of all countries to learn their customs and philosophies.”
