WIGHT OF VALUE TO CANTERBURY

r pHE almost certain 1 selection of the Canterbury Cricket Association's professional coach, P. B. Wight, for the Plunket Shield team no doubt will bring with it some minor criticism, mainly on the grounds that Canterbury cricket might be better served by giving a local player experience in firstclass cricket.

It is quite a valid argument: New Zealand players get little enough first-class cricket and with the coming tour of Britain in 1965 as many players as possible should be seen by the New Zealand selectors this season. However, the advantages of Wight playing for Canterbury should outweigh these considerations. New Zealand cricket is in need of personalities and Wight, with his fluent and aggressive batting and West Indian background, should prove a major attraction

for spectators. And it is important to have large, and satisfied crowds at Plunket Shield matches. Furthermore, by playing with the Canterbury shield players Wight will have practical demonstrations of any technical deficiencies of the players which must assist him when he is coaching them. And his example, as a batsman, should certainly be worth-while.
