Veal Production, Marketing Trial
OORTHWICKS are conducting an experiment in the production of white veal in Canterbury and its marketing. The company is interested in an alternative or better outlet, either overseas or in New Zealand, for some of the calves now killed as bobby calves. By arrangement of the firm, six Friesian calves were reared on a farm. The calves were initially fed whole milk, with the proportion of skim milk being subsequently raised to about 73 per cent. The calves put on about 31b of live-weight
a day. Last week, at eight weeks of age. they were slaughtered at Belfast, where they dressed out at an average weight of 1201 b. In packaged cuts, samples of the white veal are being shipped to both Singapore and Hong Kong to test market reaction to this class of meat. The company is also looking at the possible market for the hides and offal from these calves. The company has also conducted trials in the North Island, with sample shipments being made in this case to Middle Eastern markets.
