RELIEVING BOREDOM
In Mr C. H. Johnson's pig fattening house near Kaiapoi chains hang down from the roof into the pens. The 280 odd pigs which the house will hold live a boring life, eating and drinking and lying about putting on weight in the form of meat which will eventually find its way on to Christchurch breakfast tables as tasty bacon. Like children, in these circumstances, the young pigs can get into mischief. The pigs are constantly playing and mouthing the chains and this results in a reduction in tail bighting and savaging.
