Great Sensation To Race At Wingatui
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, Nov. 29. Great Sensation has thrived since returning to Wingatui after finishing third to Llanmai and Magician in the Caltex Mile at the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton. He will further his preparation in his attempt to win his fourth consecutive Wellington Cup by racing at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting next month. His mission on the opening day of the Dunedin meeting on December 21 will be the Hazlett Gold Cup, of one mile. This is a limited handicap with the maximum weight at 9-3. On the second day of the meeting he will be entered for the £l5OO Dunedin Cup. iof one mile and a half. The maximum weight for this event is 9-7 and the minimum weight is 7-0, ( If Great Sensation’s Mosgiel owner-trainer, Mr D. W Brown, is not satisfied with the handicap ne will have an alternative toppmg-off race for Great Sensation before going to Trentiham at the South Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting at Washdyke, a few days after the Dunedin meeting.' When Great Sensation won his first Wellington Cup with 9-2. in 1961 he established a two-mile record of 3min 17J sec for New Zealand and Australia. He began his racing that season with a win in the Canterbury Cup at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November and he was third in the Churchill Stakes at the same fixture. He was runner-up to Quite Able in tl.e Dunedin Cup and second to Cheyenne in the Hazlett Gold Cup. On the last day of the Wellington meetmg he finished second to
Picaroon in the Trentham Stakes. The following year a similar campaign was adopted. A second to Nerula in the Canterbury Cup, a second to Castlerae in the Churchill Stakes and a fourth placing in the Hazlett Gold Cup were followed by wins in the Dunedin Cup, the Wellington Cup, with 9-6, and the Trentham Stakes. Last season Great Sensation opened his campaign with a second to Stipulate in the Canterbury Cup. This was followed by a fourth in the Churchill Stakes and a second to McGregor in the Hazlett Cup. He won the Wellington Cup with 9-7 but he was unplaced in his other two races for the season—the Trentham Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth Handicap at Royal Riccarton in February, His performance in the Caltex Stakes, which now replaces the Churchill Stakes, suggested that Great Sensation is well on the way to taking another big two-mile event at Trentham. He is one of the lightestraced horses in New Zealand. Although in his eleventh year he was started only 58 times for 20 wins and 20 placings and £38.828 in stakes. This amount makes him the top stake-earner of horses raced solely in New Zealand.
