Electricity Department Boys will shortly be interviewed for selection for the eight positions in the training group to commence in 1964 as hydro electric apprentices. The course is a five year one as follows: Ist year.— At the Department’s centra depot in Christchurch under a full-time instructor Training in the use of hand and machine tools and mechanical and electrical techniques. 2nd, 3rd and 4th years— Training in substation construction and operation; power station construction and operation; draughting office; test laboratory; transmission line construction; and telephone and radio laboratory. There will also be six months* secondment to a reputatable firm of electrical contractors for experience in electrical installation and wiring work during this period. sth year— During this year boys undergo specialised training in a field of their own choice, leading to permanent staff careers in power stations, substations, test laboratory, draughting office, communications, electronics, etc. Apprentices are required to undertake a specially arranged couise of study and expected to become registered electricians. They are encouraged to proceed to technician and higher qualifications. Aptitude for technical work and mathematics to school certificate or higher standard is desirable.
